How can global goals help guide local action?

In this recorded webinar, Community Potential brings the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals down to earth by exploring how the SDGs are already shaping community work in Canada and Niagara. Rather than treating the SDGs as a distant international framework, the session focuses on how they can be used as practical tools for planning, collaboration, funding, evaluation, and impact storytelling.

The webinar features insights from:

Dr. Liette Vasseur, UNESCO Chair in Community Sustainability and faculty member in the Department of Biological Sciences at Brock University, who shares context on Canada’s progress toward the SDGs and what these goals mean at the national and global level.

Rachel Gillmore, Community Potential, who discusses how system mapping, collaboration, and shared measurement can strengthen Niagara’s response to complex community issues, including gender-based violence.

Theresa Murphy, Strong Fort Erie Neighbourhoods, who shares how local action on food access, personal essentials, neighbourhood connection, and community care connects directly to the SDGs.

Together, the speakers demonstrate that the SDGs are not only about global progress, but are also a useful framework for understanding the everyday work already happening across Niagara, including:

  • Reducing poverty
  • Improving health and well-being
  • Strengthening equity
  • Building sustainable communities
  • Creating partnerships for change

This recording may be useful for nonprofits, funders, municipalities, researchers, planners, and community partners who are looking for clearer ways to connect their work to shared outcomes and broader systems change.
