Making caregiving a national priority is the shared purpose of more than 500 caregivers, care providers, systems leaders, policymakers, and researchers from across Canada, who gathered for this November, 2025 summit held in Ottawa. Participants call for recognition of care as not only a private act, but the infrastructure that makes all other work possible, including our participation in family, community and public life.
An increasing amount of care is happening at home and in the community in Canada, as hospitals, health and social care organizations and long-term care homes face growing volumes and more complexity than ever before. Data shared at the summit includes:
- More than 8 million Canadians care for a family member or friend.
- Half of Canadians will be a caregiver at some point.
- Half of caregivers in Canada feel overwhelmed, stressed and face financial pressures.
- An Ontario Caregiver Organization report shows that more than 70 per cent of caregivers are so burned out they feel like they can’t go on.
