Rallying for Resilience; Keeping Children and Youth Active in a Changing Climate is the 2024 ParticipACTION Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth. It reveals higher grades than the 2022 edition in some areas, including overall physical activity at D+, an increase from D at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The D+ grade is still undesirable, as it indicates that only 39% of children and youth (5 to 17 years of age) in Canada are getting the recommended 60 minutes of moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity per day.

The 2024 report card examines the relationship between climate change and physical activity among children and youth; disparities in physical activity levels among equity-denied groups; and challenges to be overcome to improve physical activity levels among children and youth.

Ways communities can help improve physical activity levels among children and youth include:

  • Invest in creating and revitalizing indoor and outdoor recreation facilities (including playgrounds) that are close to home, accessible and low-cost, to promote equitable physical activity participation.
  • Involve community members (including kids and teens) in designing these spaces to help ensure they meet their needs and will be used more frequently.
  • Extend and maintain active transportation routes, particularly around schools and community spaces, to encourage families to regularly use active modes of travel.
