On January 18 2026, the Province of Ontario recognized the achievements of seven of Niagara’s local municipalities and the Age-Friendly Niagara Council (AFNC), for leadership in strengthening Niagara as a welcoming community for people of all ages. Grimsby, Lincoln, Pelham, Port Colborne, St. Catharines, Thorold and West Lincoln, along with the AFNC, were recognized at a ceremony in Toronto.

Staying physically, mentally and socially active is the prescription for healthy aging”, says Jean D’Amelio Swyer, Chair of the Niagara Older Adult Alliance (NOAA) and the Thorold Age-Friendly Committee. “Age-Friendly Communities promote healthy living, which is especially important in the Niagara region, home to one of the highest concentrations of older adults in Ontario”. The NOAA brings together at one table leaders from Niagara’s local municipal older adult advisory committees, to share information and align planning and action. NOAA works collaboratively with the AFNC, which serves as the Niagara’s Council on Aging, committed to advocacy and best practices to advance the World Health Organization (WHO) eight domains of Age-Friendly Communities in the Niagara community context.
