This dashboard summarizes progress on poverty reduction for Canadians and their households, from 2020 to 2024. In 2024, the poverty rate for Canada remained relatively stable at 11.0%, compared with the previous year (11.1%). This means that approximately 4.5 million Canadians lived below the Official Poverty line.
Canada’s Poverty Reduction Strategy (2018) introduced the Official Poverty Line for Canada and 12 indicators to track progress. There are 4 indicators each, in 3 groupings: Dignity; Opportunity and Inclusion; Resilience and Security.
Indicators include:
- Deep Income Poverty
- Unmet housing needs and chronic homelessness
- Unmet health needs
- Food Insecurity
- Relative Low Income
- Bottom 40 percent Income share
- Youth engagement
- Literacy and numeracy
- Median hourly wage
- Average poverty gap
- Asset resilience
- Low income entry and exit rates
