Durable by Design: Physical Literacy and Older Adults @ Niagara Region Headquarters - Community Education Room

For the first time, there are more Canadians over the age of 65 than under the age of 15.

Because Canadians are living longer, and our quality of life depends on staying physically active, developing and maintaining physical literacy can be the key to resilience – reducing the effects of falls, injuries, and illness.

This half day workshop will introduce participants to a new training program designed to integrate physical literacy development into activity for older adults. The activities presented can be easily implemented by a recreation leader or health care worker. Workshop participants will be introduced to the concepts of physical literacy and encouraged to try activities that create durability.

Preventing Falls While Encouraging Outdoor Activity @ Online

You probably know that older adults are at serious risk of a fall-related injury having a big negative impact on their lives. Many older adults avoid going outside in the winter because of a fear of falling and can become isolated and inactive. Both situations can trigger a downward spiral of negative health effects we want to avoid.

You likely also know that slip-resistant footwear can prevent falls and encourage older adults to stay active in the winter. However, you may not know that it is difficult to select footwear that will perform well on icy surfaces. Our testing has shown that it is impossible to predict slip-resistance of footwear just by looking at them. Most footwear on the market today performs poorly on ice.

In this webinar, the presenter will describe how we test footwear, what we have learned about preventing falls on ice as well as the results of a recent field study that showed we can reduce the risk of falls by a factor of at least three with the best footwear.
